Hauho - "The Dark North of the East"
The ancient Persian coins and jewelry found in the area testify to Hauho’s trade relations with the Eastern countries.
Similarly, in One Thousand and One Nights, a sapphire blue zibeline brought from "The dark North" is mentioned.
At least we Hauho-dwellers like to think that the dark North refers precisely to our lands and our ancestors who used to hunt in these areas.
The Long Past of Hauho
Situated in the vicinity of the River Volga, Hauho was known as an excellent hunting and fishing area already thousands of years ago. One of the most valuable fur-animals native to the area was the sable. Its precious fur was much in demand on international marketplaces of the Baltic Sea, the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. Hauho’s high repute as an excellent hunting and fishing area was further improved by its favorable location at intercontinental routes and waterways to the east, south and west as well as to the wilderness of the North Sea.
The treasure hoards subsequently found on the fields and bogs of the area have brought Hauho’s flourishing ancient trade connections back to focus.
The well-known ancient Uiskoje docks are located a stone’s throw from Hahkialan Uiskola. The international history of the area lends a new dimension to Hauho’s nature at present as well. Lake Kirrinen, which used to be a busy waterway, is today more quiet. It is difficult to imagine the hustle and bustle of the old days when looking at the calm surface of the lake.
